Cruises and excursions

Whales are found in every ocean of the world, but the St. Lawrence River boasts the largest number of great whales along with numerous species of smaller ones. Five or six species,  including the humpback whale (15 m), the fin whale (20 m), and the world's largest mammal, the blue whale (30 m, 140 tons), regularly visit the Charlevoix coast, drawn by an abundance of food. Oxygenated by the cold Labrador current, the waters of the estuary are rich in krill and smaller fish which whales love. From the docks of Saint-Siméon, Baie-Saint-Catherine and Tadoussac, cruises take visitors out to admire these giants of the sea in their natural habitat and to discover the legendary lighthouses that have long stood watch over the St. Lawrence. Warm clothing is a must! Whale watching activities in the Parc marin Saguenay-Saint-Laurent marine park are governed by the Regulations of Marine Activities, which may be consulted at tourist information centers in the region.

Before boarding ship at Baie-Sainte-Catherine for a cruise, be sure to visit the observation and interprestation center at Pointe-Noire, part of the Par marin Saguenay-Saint-Laurent Discovery Network. The center presents a variety of interpretaion activities on marine environments, including marin mammals, and offers great views of the Saguenay River flowing past steep-rising cliffs. A succession of coves, bays and points stretches away towards the horizon, forming a rugged and grandiose landscape that has attracted travellers to the region as far back as the 19th century. Fjord cruises are also available from the docks at Baie-Sainte-Catherine and Tadoussac.

In addition to whale watching and fjord cruises, Charlevoix visitors choose from a variety of other excursions. Whether it's sailing on the St. Lawrence or a scenic cruise in a bateau-mouche up the spectacular Rivière Malbaie valley in the Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-rivière-Malbaie, contact with the water and views of the surrounding landscape are a surefire way to leave routine behind and reconnect with nature.
